About
Complete undergraduate path covering relational database systems from the application and systems perspectives: the relational model, SQL, conceptual/logical schema design and normalization, disk storage and indexing, query processing, and transaction management (concurrency control and recovery). Aligned with UCLA CS 143 topics and standard texts (Silberschatz/Korth/Sudarshan Database System Concepts, Garcia-Molina/Ullman/Widom Database Systems: The Complete Book). Assumes CS 32/33/35L-level programming, systems, and discrete math.
Goal
Design normalized relational schemas from requirements/ER models; write correct and efficient SQL (including advanced queries, constraints, views); explain and analyze core DBMS internals (file organizations, B+-tree/hash indexes, join algorithms and basic cost-based processing); and reason about ACID transactions, serializability, locking/optimistic concurrency, logging, and recovery.
