About
Selected major traditions and periods (not exhaustive encyclopedia): e.g., South/East/Southeast Asian sculpture, painting, and architecture; African sculpture, masking, and court arts; Mesoamerican and Andean monumental and portable arts; Pacific (including Polynesia) forms. Emphasizes indigenous contexts, materials, and resistance to purely Western periodization. Aligns with AP Content Areas 5–9 and global survey reforms.
Goal
Describe distinctive materials, forms, and cultural functions of major non-Western traditions covered; apply formal, iconographic, and contextual methods respectfully; articulate why chronological ‘Western’ labels often fit poorly and how exchange and colonialism shape the historical record and museum presentation.
